Raspberry Tulamin: the pros and cons of the variety, the rules of care, productivity
Each gardener is looking for the most suitable variety of fruit trees and shrubs, based not only on their appearance or productivity, but also on the characteristics of cultivation. Tulamin raspberries are a good option for planting in the southern regions and on the protected territory of the middle zone of the Russian Federation, and what exactly it is remarkable for and how to properly organize plant care - this will be discussed in this article.
Raspberry Tulamin appeared on the territory of Russia and Europe relatively recently and has been actively grown here a little more than ten years. However, in Canada and America adjacent to it, culture is loved and appreciated much longer, because it was from there that it spread throughout the world (selection studies were conducted in Vancouver). The name of the variety comes from the Canadian river Tulamin, and it has been grown since 1989. Varieties GlenProsen and Nootka became the parent forms for the new plant, from which the variety inherited all its main characteristics during the selection process.
Did you know? Raspberry is a good antidepressant. Due to the large amount of copper in its composition, it copes with stressful conditions, and in order to improve its mood, it is enough to eat only a few handfuls of delicious red berries.
Two-meter raspberry bushes of the Tulamin variety have long and durable shoots that rarely bend under the weight of the berries. There are few thorns and almost all of them are at the base of the branches. Light green leaf plates are medium in size and create an average thickening of the plantings. Basal shoots are moderate, so you don’t have to worry about the very rapid growth of raspberry trees in the homeland.
During fruiting, dark pink fruits are formed on the shoots, glistening in the sun. Each oblong-conical berry reaches a weight of 3-4 g and has a pleasant, aromatic taste. Harvesting is not difficult, since the fruits are easily separated from the stem and retain their shape.
Raspberry Tulamin belongs to the fast-growing, self-fertile summer varieties of culture, so when grown in the garden, you can do without pollinators. However, one cannot ignore other characteristic features of the plant, in particular, the level of drought and frost resistance, as well as the nature of fruiting and yield of bushes.
Drought resistance, frost resistance
Low air temperatures are often fatal for raspberry bushes Tulamin, especially if winters are light snowy. Shoots can freeze at -20 ° C, although there have been cases when they can withstand and -29 ° C. The drought is not so terrible for the plant, but in order to collect a plentiful harvest of the most juicy and large berries, one should not forget about regular moistening of the soil.
Productivity and fruiting
Observing the rules for planting and further growing raspberry bushes, up to 4 kg of raspberries can be removed from one plantforming on last year's shoots. The first fruits ripen by the end of July, but the peak of fruiting occurs in early or mid-August. It is noteworthy that at any time the berries are not harvested and their size remains the same both during the first and during the last harvest, which in the southern regions often falls at the beginning of autumn.
Ripe berries are characterized by a universal purpose and high taste properties, therefore they are equally appreciated by both amateur gardeners and more experienced gardeners who grow products for commercial purposes.
Advantages and disadvantages
The raspberry variety Tulamin has both positive and negative characteristics, but raspberry has undoubtedly more advantages.
- First of all, they include:
- long fruiting period (at least 50 days);
- stable yield;
- harmonious dessert flavor;
- attractive appearance of the fruit;
- good keeping quality of the harvested crop;
- the possibility of long transportation;
- universal purpose of berries.
Important! To create supports, it is better to use wooden beams or planks, avoiding the use of metal fittings and wires that can oxidize at high humidity.
- As for the disadvantages of cultivating plants of the variety, then, first of all, these are:
- the need to install supporting trellises for garter bushes planted in a trench way;
- low frost resistance of plants, which is why even when grown in the middle zone of the Russian Federation, a protective shelter for the winter is required.
Planting raspberry bushes on the site begins with the selection of the most suitable for this time, site and preparation of the raspberry seedling of the desired variety. Special attention is paid to the process of planting activities, on the correct implementation of which depends on the further adaptation of the plant in a new place.
Raspberry Tulamin can land on the site in both spring and autumn, and the choice of a specific time depends more on the climatic zone of crop cultivation. In the first case, planting is started only after complete snow melting and sufficient heating of the soil layer (up to approximately + 10 ° C), and in the second case, planting operations are planned 25-30 days before the expected first frosts. In the northern regions with autumn planting, it is better not to risk it, since it is very difficult to predict weather changes, and planted raspberries may not have time to take root in a new place.
Choosing the right place
In one place, raspberries Tulamin can successfully grow for about 10 years, which means that it is worth approaching the choice of such a site with all responsibility, taking into account the requirements of the culture to the composition of the soil, light and humidity. The ideal option is a place that is well warmed up and illuminated by the sun's rays, located on a small hill.
Low places with high humidity in this case will not work, but if there is no choice, then you will have to pour an artificial elevation from the soil, forming a small hill for a seedling. It is useful to plant raspberries next to the fence or farm buildings located on the north side of the plants.
Important! Do not plant raspberry bushes after wild strawberries, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes and other solanaceous crops.
They will protect the culture from sudden gusts of cold wind, contribute to the retention of moisture in the soil and will retain snow in the winter. However, be sure to ensure that such structures do not create a shadow for plants, because in such conditions you can not hope to get large and very sweet fruits.
The composition of the soil for raspberries should be as balanced as possible, with a neutral or slightly acid reaction. For spring planting of seedlings, they begin to prepare the substrate in the fall, clearing the selected area of weeds, plowing it no less than 30 cm in depth, and introducing mineral or organic fertilizers. Available options for such top dressing will be compost (10 kg per 1 m²), humus (8 kg per 1 m²), potash fertilizers (30 g per 1 m²), phosphorus fertilizers (60 g per 1 m²).
Selection and preparation of planting material
It is advisable to purchase high-quality seedlings of the described variety only in specialized nurseries, whose employees will be able to provide appropriate quality certificates.
In this case, the probability of buying a regrowth is minimal, but, in addition, the gardener should still know about the main characteristics of a quality young plant:
- the presence of 2-3 stems, without any damage;
- the elasticity of the root system of the selected specimen, sufficiently moistened, but without signs of decay;
- the presence of at least three buds at the base of the shoots.
Before planting a seedling directly, you need to inspect it again, remove the rotten roots, and dip the remaining healthy roots into a special mashroom made from clay, water and manure. In addition, in the finished substance, you can add a chemical agent of improved root formation (for example, "Kornevin"), and then lower the lower part of the seedling for about 6-8 hours.
Caring for raspberry bushes of the Tulamin variety is based on all the same actions as when growing other varietal varieties of culture: timely watering, fertilizing, pruning, loosening and mulching the soil.
Did you know? Raspberries are one of the most useful berries for facial skin, since about 22% of essential oils are present in its composition. Effective for a person in this regard will be not only the fruits, but also the leaves of the plant, from which teas and masks are prepared.
Raspberry top dressing is carried out only in the third year of its cultivation on the site, since the young plant used for planting nutrients is enough for a few years.
The raspberry plant fertilizer may be as follows:
- in late autumn, after harvesting, humus or rotted manure is introduced into the soil under the raspberry, spending 3-5 kg of fertilizer per 1 m²;
- in early spring or early summer, you can feed the plants with complex mineral compositions for berry crops, which must necessarily include potassium and phosphorus;
- peat should be used at any phase of the plant’s vegetation, in particular, using it to mulch the upper soil layer after the next watering and loosening;
- nitrogen-containing mixtures, including ash, can be scattered on the surface of the beds at any time of the year, the main thing: to mix the substance evenly with the soil.
Another mandatory procedure for growing raspberries is the timely pruning of shoots. For the Tulamin variety, the most relevant will be the summer or autumn execution of the procedure, since all shoots that proliferate in the current year are subject to complete cutting (immediately after harvesting). With the advent of spring, bushes can be inspected once again and, if necessary, removed the frozen tips of branches, weak and damaged shoots during the winter.
Harvesting and storage
Harvesting raspberry fruit is carried out at the stage of their full ripening (not earlier than the end of July) and is carried out in accordance with the general requirements:
- it is advisable to take fruits only on a clear and fine day, mainly in the morning, but after the dew has gone (wet berries will not be stored for long);
- try not to pin down raspberries when removed (even slightly crushed specimens will quickly deteriorate);
- berry storage containers should be shallow so that berries can be scattered in several layers;
- the best place to store the harvest is the lower compartments of the refrigerator or the cellar with temperature indicators inside at the level of 0 ... + 3 ° C (under such conditions, raspberries can lie for about three days).
For long-term storage, it is best to freeze the collected berries, although as for the Tulamin variety, it is also suitable for processing for winter harvesting.
The preparation of the variety for winter is based on two main measures: pruning of the shrub and its further shelter with natural or artificial material, which is especially important when growing crops in the central and northern regions of the Russian Federation with severe winters.
After trimming the shrub, it should have no more than 5-7 shoots of the current year, and all damaged or deflated branches should be completely removed. Water-loading irrigation will also be useful, which is performed no later than a month before the alleged frosts, spending 20 liters of water for each adult bush. From top dressing, after harvesting, you can use potash and phosphorus fertilizers, but it is better not to use nitrogen so that the shoots do not start growing.
After performing all these procedures, it remains only to remove the branches from the trellis, bend them to the soil and either just fix later raking up the snow, or additionally cover with spruce branches. In too harsh regions of cultivation, spandex or other artificial material is used in addition to which the shoots are wrapped.
The main method of propagation of raspberries Tulamin on the site - the use of basal bushes, which is separated from the mother plant mainly in late summer or early fall. After digging up, the young plant should be dug in the greenhouse for rooting, and then the strong seedlings can be transferred to a permanent place of cultivation.
Usually, several weeks are spent on rooting the shoots, and then a few months later the plant will adapt to the new conditions. If we are talking about cultivation in the northern regions, then it is advisable to transfer raspberries to the open ground only in the next spring so that the seedlings do not freeze (if the crop is generally grown in open soil).
Diseases and Pests
The raspberry variety Tulamin has good resistance to the main raspberry diseases and pests, however, it is impossible to completely exclude the possibility of plant damage by weevils, ticks or caterpillars.At the first signs of pest activity, the bushes are treated with insecticidal drugs (for example, Iskra) and strongly affected parts are completely removed with further burning. A good prevention is the regular processing of raspberry plantings with a one percent Bordeaux mixture or copper sulphate, which is sprayed in the spring, before buds open in the bushes. If there is a suspicion of an increased danger of insect damage, you can repeat the treatment also in the fall, shortly after harvesting.
For the prevention of fungal ailments, in particular, popular powdery mildew, it is important to control the level of hydration of raspberries and to get rid of all diseased plants growing next to it in a timely manner. Effective means of control in this case will be such fungicides, like "Fitosporin-M", "Fundazol", "Topaz", but their use is allowed only until the fruit is formed on the shoots. After that, you will only have to remove the affected parts of the plant or use folk methods of struggle that are safer for quality berries.
Having familiarized yourself with the main characteristics of the Tulamin raspberry variety, you can confidently talk about the relevance of its cultivation in private, because at low labor costs you can get a stable harvest of delicious and sweet fruits. Of course, cultivation in open ground is more suitable for the southern regions, but when grown in greenhouse conditions, raspberries show good yield indicators, so it can be recommended for cultivation in any region of Russia.
Tulameen is considered the worldwide standard of raspberry flavor.Berry with an average weight of 5-7g., Very beautiful, shiny, bright, does not fade during the collection. In Poland, it can freeze during harsh winters.
