Zyugan repairing raspberries: variety-timer, yield from the bush
Raspberry is a berry popular and beloved by many. But, unfortunately, it is not possible to enjoy it for a long time - the summer raspberry season is only in June. To get two harvests per season and to prolong the pleasure of berries, it is possible for the repairing varieties, one of which, Zyugan raspberries, will be described in this article.
Repairing raspberries Zyugan
Sugana Repairing Raspberries is the first twotimer from Lübera (Switzerland), which was founded in 1993 by Marcus Kobelt.
Raspberry Zyugana is the first variety in the world with two comparable crops throughout the year: she bears fruit on the lateral branches of last year’s stems in early summer in June, and at the tip of the shoots of the current year in late summer, starting in August. This is a hybrid of two well-known varieties: Autumn Bliss variety, which gave Zyugan raspberries the wonderful aroma and taste of wild berries, and Tulamin varieties with a compact and low bush.
In Europe, this variety is cultivated in industrial production for two crops - in June and August. Varietal seedlings can be purchased through the online store or ordered by mail. The cost per bush is 200-300 rubles.
Important! Firm "Lubera" assures that in breeding varieties genetic engineering methods are not used, and selection is carried out only in the usual way (pollination and subsequent selection).
What does “grade-timer” mean?
Often in the description of the variety is the name "Raspberry Zyugana (Sugana)" or "Raspberry Twotimer Zyugana (Sugana)". Both of these names are correct, refer to the same variety, and the term “Twotimer” only emphasizes the possibility of obtaining two crops per season without reducing yield.
Due to its shape of the bush and the strength of growth, Zyugan is better suited for cultivation with the “tutime" ("two times"). But the variety can be planted as usual, but a little later ripening autumn raspberries. The difference in cultivation is provided by the feature of pruning bushes in the fall.
All breeding efforts of the Swiss company are aimed at developing varieties for home gardens in small areas, so the Zyugan variety is suitable for growing even in pots, containers and tubs on balconies and terraces, while remaining high-yielding
Appearance and size of berries
Description and characteristics of this variety:
- The bush is 1.5 m tall, compact with vertical columnar growth, twice blooming, slightly spiked. Lateral branches are long, which facilitates harvesting. Flowering takes place in April - June, fruiting in a two-year culture from June until the frost.
- Fruits are rounded conical with excellent traction of drupes. The mass of berries is 5–7 g, the size is up to 2.5 cm. The total volume of homogeneous fruits of the highest commercial quality is 98%.
- The pulp is dense, light red, juicy, sweet with the aroma of wild berries.
- High-yielding variety (3 kg per bush) of universal use - the berries have an exceptionally delicate taste, are suitable for fresh use and for freezing.
- The variety is ideal for small plots and for growing in containers.
- Winter hardiness is high (9 points out of 10).
- The correct shape of the fruit and dense pulp provide convenient collection, storage for up to 4 days and transportation.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
- Obvious advantages of the variety:
- Easy to grow and care.
- Double fruiting per season.
- High winter hardiness and drought tolerance.
- High yield.
- Uniformity of the highest quality berries.
- Suitable for growing in tight spaces.
- Integrated resistance to major diseases of the culture.
- Known flaws:
- In regions with early winters, the variety must be grown in an annual crop or in greenhouses.
- High drainage requirements to eliminate waterlogging of the soil.
- The need to mulch plantings to control weeds, since deep cultivation is not possible due to the surface location of the roots.
Agricultural technology of raspberries Zyugan will not cause any particular difficulties. Having carefully understood the details and mastered the technique of caring for raspberries, you will not spend much time on these procedures and following all the rules.
Did you know? What is the difference between blackberry and black raspberry - the raspberry berry is hollow inside, since the inner core remains on the branch. The blackberry berry breaks off along with the receptacle.
Raspberries grow best and bear fruit in the sun, but can tolerate partial shading. The main thing is that sun lighting should be at least 6 hours during the day. To better illuminate and warm the soil, the beds are arranged in the north-south direction.
Zyugan bushes are powerful and strong, but a plant loaded with a crop becomes heavy, so it is advisable to choose a landing site that is protected from the wind
Raspberries prefer moisture-resistant, but well-drained soils. Do not plant it in lowlands, where melt and rainwater accumulate, and on swampy soils. Groundwater level should be below 1.5 m. In humid areas, good drainage and the formation of beds 30-30 cm above the soil level are necessary.
It is recommended that a deep digging of the soil on the bayonet of a shovel with mixing of the upper and lower layers and the introduction of overripe manure or compost. Be sure to remove perennial weeds.
The soil on the site should be from slightly acidic with a pH of 6–6.5 to alkaline, but not higher than pH 8. This can be checked using a soil test kit or a pH meter
You can plant bushes along the fences, at the walls of garden buildings, but away from crops that have the same pests with raspberries (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, strawberries). Good companions of raspberries are apple trees, garlic, turnips, from herbs - yarrow, tansy.
Landing and care
For planting raspberries, use purchased varietal seedlings, or select annual powerful shoots 0.6–0.8 cm thick with well-developed roots on your plot.
Try to plant purchased seedlings as soon as possible. If the roots are dried, soak them for 20–40 minutes in water.
The planting dates for new plants are autumn (until mid-October) or late spring. Raspberries are planted in separate bushes in pits or trenches. Planting scheme - inside the row at a distance of 30 cm, between rows - 1.2–2 m. Planting depth - 5–8 cm. On each running meter, 3 shoots of Zyugana are planted.
To plant raspberries in a bush method, dig a hole twice as wide and deeper than the size of the root lobe. Mix garden soil and compost evenly to increase soil fertility. You can add ash or complex mineral fertilizers for berry bushes. Place the bush in the center of the pit and cover it with fertilized soil.
Important! You can not plant raspberries in swampy or frozen ground. In such cases, you should postpone landing and wait for more favorable conditions.
When planting raspberries in rows, bushes are planted in a trench 50 × 50 cm, filling them with a fertilized soil mixture. If you want to establish a root barrier for raspberries, then put slate or stones to a height of 30 cm in the dug holes and trenches.
Tamp the soil around the roots to remove air pockets and ensure good contact with the soil. Air pockets and loose soil around the roots can cause raspberries to stick poorly to the landing pit and tip over in the wind. Water the plants well.
After planting, cut the stems 25 cm above the ground - this will provide good rooting and stimulate the growth of new shoots. In the future, replace the plants on the beds that have not moved to growth.Mulch the plantings with straw, leaves or dry grass with a layer of 5–7 cm to preserve moisture in the soil during the growing season and to suppress weed growth.
Important! PProvided that the planting planted in late autumn is well rooted, the next spring will be healthier than the plant that was planted in February or March, as root growth continues even after the growing season.
Since raspberry bushes have surface roots, it is important to regularly water and fertilize plantings.
The soil around raspberries should be constantly moistened. Make sure that during dry periods, moisture is supplied to the plants in sufficient quantities and regularly so that the soil remains moist at a depth of 20-30 cm. Drip irrigation is one of the best and most economical methods of watering raspberries., because it provides uniform moisture and does not erode the upper layers of the soil.
For double fruiting and the formation of large raspberries need a lot of nutrients. Therefore, the bushes are fed with organic and mineral fertilizers during the growing season, observing the concentration specified in the instructions. In the spring, under each bush, 4 l of humus-rash should be applied, which not only serves as fertilizer, but also improves the soil structure. You can use additional mineral fertilizers for berry shrubs ("Gumi Omi") or wood ash.
During the flowering period, it is necessary to re-feed raspberries with potassium-phosphate fertilizers (superphosphate and potassium sulfate).
During the growing season, apply extended-release complex mineral fertilizers (“Yara Mila», "Kemira", "Yara Vila", "Osmokot"), liquid fertilizers for general purpose berry crops or mulch with rotted manure. Fertilize plants every 7-14 days during the growing season, following the directions on the label. Then stop the bait in July, so that the plants gradually go into dormancy by the end of the season.
The choice and rate of fertilizer application depends on the fertility of the soil, the health and strength of the bushes
Pest and Disease Control
Raspberry Zyugan has comprehensive protection against the most common diseases of the culture - resistant to late blight, raspberry mosaic, dwarf bush and root rot, not affected by raspberry aphids. But unfavorable conditions, agricultural technology errors or infection from neighboring plants can lead to diseases and pests.
Since raspberries are consumed fresh and often unwashed, then the use of chemicals to protect against damage by pests and diseases is possible only before flowering and after harvest. Because of this, the prevention of lesions and an attentive attitude to landings come first. Many problems with the spread of pests can be avoided by choosing the right site and cultivating the soil, observing crop rotation and plant compatibility, selecting sustainable varieties and planting healthy seedlings.
During the growing season, remove the stems with twisted leaves, too small and deformed berries. Try to notice the appearance of spots, discoloration, drying out of parts of plants or the appearance of mold on leaves or fruits in time. All pruning, weeds and old mulch should be burned to avoid the spread of diseases and insects. To suppress weeds between rows of raspberries, it is recommended to sow lawn grass with dense and slowly growing turf.
In the spring, in order to protect raspberries, the soil, berry bushes and neighboring crops must be treated with Bordeaux liquid, copper sulphate or urea. Repeat spraying until flowering, so as not to kill the bees and pollinating insects.
In case of diseases, use biological products, growth and fertilizer regulators with the properties of fungicides and insecticides (Siliplant, EcoFus, Fitosporin, Bitoxibacillin, Lepidocide)
Raspberry Zyugana has strong and durable stems, and the authors of the variety report that garter is not required on good and fertile soils. But on poor soils or on windy areas the bushes are less powerful and may break under the weight of the crop. In addition, the slope of the branches creates shading inside the bush, where the crop is formed on the side shoots, so in such cases it is recommended to tie the stems.
The height of the raspberry stem is 1.5–1.8 m, and for the garter you should use a support stake if you are growing raspberries in the bush method, or trellis when growing in rows.
Did you know? The raspberry color familiar to us has already lost its relevance, because now there are varieties of raspberries with red, purple, black and yellow berries. By the way, among the varieties of raspberries Zyugan there is a repair grade of Zyugan gold with yellow berries.
The supporting structures in the form of columns are placed at the end of the row. 3 horizontal wires are pulled between the posts at a distance of about 50 cm from each other. The bottom wire is fixed at a height of 80 cm from the ground. To these wires and twine stems are tied up as they grow, to ensure aeration of plantings and sun lighting. Do not make the knots too tight - enough so that the wind does not move the stem from its place, and its center is completely open to sunlight.
As the berries ripen on such supports, you can throw a net as protection against birds
Pruning and wintering
Questions regarding pruning raspberries are the most popular among amateur gardeners. Pruning raspberries in the spring is carried out as early as possible on new, still soft shoots, shortening them by a short length (5-10 cm) so that a sufficient number of leaves remain on the plant.
If the ideal time for pruning raspberries in the spring was missed, you should wait for winter to prune mature stems.
There is no need to trim young plantings in the first year. After the end of the growing season, the growth of the stems slows down, however, the roots continue to grow - as a result, by autumn the plant will be compact, with a well-developed root system. In the next season, with spring pruning, shorten the stems to about eight buds per branch.
To obtain two harvests per season, it is necessary to leave the unfrozen stems uncut in the fall - fruit branches will appear on their lateral branches in the spring, on which the summer crop will form and ripen. At the tops of new shoots, the crop will ripen in the fall.
If for some reason you want to grow Zyugan only for the autumn harvest, all the stems must be cut in the fall 2 cm above the ground. In this case, the variety loses its properties as a “timer” and will bear fruit like a regular late variety.
Important! Radical pruning (more than 25% of the stem) should not be carried out during the growing season.
In spring, raspberry bushes are pruned by all weak, diseased and broken branches. Shorten the tips of the stems, which were frostbitten, to live tissue. New shoots are cut to the first awakening kidney. For each bush, 4-6 of the strongest shoots are left, the rest are removed. Raspberry Zyugana gives less basal shoots than summer varieties of raspberries, but still all the shoots outside the raspberry should be removed in a timely manner.
Raspberries Zyugana declared by the authors as a winter-hardy variety and can withstand significant temperature drops. In the southern regions, to ensure wintering, it is enough to cover plantings after pruning and irrigation with a layer of mulch from straw of 15–20 cm. And in winter, to spread a layer of snow.
For northern regions with severe frosts and little snowy windy winters, additional shelter for plantings will be needed - raspberry stalks are tied, tilted to the ground and covered with agrofibre or other insulation.
Harvesting and transportation
Raspberries are harvested by hand in dry weather, in the evening, when the midday heat has passed. Berries harvested in rain or dew deteriorate quickly.
When harvesting, select berries that are fully ripe and have acquired the color stated in the description of the variety.Take the berry (without squeezing) and pull lightly. If it is easily separated from the stem and the inner part (core) remains on the plant, the fruit has ripened. Gathering should be carried out regularly to stimulate plants to further form and ripen berries.
Did you know? In medieval Germany, raspberries were used to tame horses that were considered enchanted. A raspberry branch was tied to the horse's body to calm her and remove the spell.
Collect berries every 2-3 days in separate small "breathing" containers or baskets so that they do not crumple. Carefully remove any visible dirt, leaves, earth, but do not wash them unnecessarily. Store the collected berries in a cool place or immediately put them into processing - eat, freeze. In the refrigerator, berries are stored for 2-3 days. Frozen berries will last 10-12 months without loss of quality.
Due to the dense pulp of berries Zyugan can be transported in separate baskets or containers, where it is collected from the bush. Before transporting raspberries need to be cooled
Raspberry Zyugana is an excellent choice of high-yielding varieties, both for farm production and for growing in small garden plots. Raspberry will delight you with delicious and fragrant berries for a long time - all summer from June until the first autumn frosts.
Network user reviews
ADVANTAGES: Large berry, does not burn in the sun, the bush does not fall, is not finicky, reproduces well.
DISADVANTAGES: Pretty prickly (small spikes)
Zyugana is a repairing raspberry variety (fruiting on young shoots from August to frost). I grow this variety for 3 years, I got uterine roots from Poland. The berry is quite large (the first fruiting and the last berries weighing up to 10 grams), with an average bone. It is inferior in taste to summer varieties (less sweet and aromatic), but at the same time the taste is quite rich, not cloying. Ripens quite actively, the ripe berry does not crumble (it easily stands up to 5 days, even in rain and wind). Raspberries are not very picky, do not require garter and frequent watering. The variety showed excellent performance on two-time fruiting, but with such cultivation it requires more attention (removal of prolific shoots, top dressing, treatment from pests). The actual yield is 120 kg per 1 hundredth. Great for a summer cottage!
