How to care for raspberries in autumn
For successful gardening, it is important not only to have your own garden, but also to properly care for it. Raspberry care should be of high quality and seasonal, this will help to collect a large and tasty crop. All relevant work must be carried out in accordance with the rules set forth below in the article.
The main periods of care for raspberries
Raspberries require special care in the fall. This time includes the early fall and late fall periods.
Did you know? Raspberry berry syrup is used for the preparation of medicines as a sweetener that can improve the taste of medicines.
Leaving, which should be carried out in early September.
The main elements of the work:
- top dressing;
Proper care for raspberries in the fall will help you get an excellent harvest next season.
Enrichment with fertilizers depends on the quality of the soil. If the soil is not very rich in minerals, it will be advisable to add potassium sulfate to the ground. But it is also important to remember that if the earth is quite loose, it is good black soil and contains a sufficient amount of moisture, then it is not worth adding additional fertilizers, as they can adversely affect yield. It will not be superfluous to fertilize with microelements: 3 g of zinc sulfate and 5 g of manganese sulfate per 1 m² of soil.
Pruning should be carried out, shortening the plant almost to the level of the soil - this applies to shoots that are more than two years old. Green shoots can also be removed, since they probably will not have time to bear fruit at the beginning of frost and will simply die. Dry branches, broken, and those that have already yielded are cut.
- The benefits of circumcision:
- shrubs get high immunity;
- wintering is tolerated more calmly and successfully;
- if the plant had pests, they are removed;
- yield increase for the next year.
Important! That part of the plant that has already borne fruit, you can even dig and remove a larger amount, almost under the root, and then fill it up a place fresh moist soil.
Watering should be done exclusively early in the morning or late in the evening, and only at the root, since the water that falls on the leaves can adversely affect their quality, and the plant will begin to rot. In small areas, watering under the root will be easily carried out with a watering can or bucket. On large plantations, it will not be superfluous to do it yourself or purchase a special system for watering under the root. The drip irrigation system will be especially convenient for farmers.
Watering in the fall should be reduced to a minimum, and when cold weather sets in, you just need to stop it, since excess moisture can cause the plant to begin to rot, and if frost comes, it will freeze and die.
Watering completely stops during the autumn rains, they will be quite enough for raspberries. If there is no rain, and frost has not yet come, then you can water the plant a little every other day, so that the earth is only slightly moist.
When the temperature during the day is no more than zero and gradually drops, it is worth starting the late autumn shrub care procedures.
Late fall care includes:
- treatment from pests and diseases;
- removal of unripe shoots;
- last watering;
- raspberry shelter for the winter.
Pest and Disease Treatment
Everything that is under the bushes should be removed - these may be old leaves and fruits of raspberries, previously trimmed shoots and branches. This is all burned, and the land on the beds can be fertilized with this ash.Bushes should be treated with 5% Bordeaux liquid, it will perfectly cope with aphids and ticks.Processing should be carried out in dry weather; it is advisable that the bushes are not wet, and there is no rain after the fertilizer.
Removing unripe shoots
All shoots that appeared during the fall must be removed. Since they have not matured, they will not be able to winter, subsequently freezing will begin, and with the advent of spring they will begin to rot. This rot will reduce the yield of the plant and may reduce its immunity, which is why the bush will begin to hurt.
Important! After each remote shoot you should wipe the pruner shears or scissors with which you circumcise with alcohol, it will help to avoid carrying pests and diseases.
It should be done in the last warm days of autumn, usually this is the end of October. Since raspberries are very fond of moisture, it is necessary to pour 3 buckets per 1 m², and if it has recently rained, then 2. This will help to take the moisture it needs, which will allow overwintering. Experienced gardeners are sometimes stocked with rainwater for irrigation, it will be the best option for plants. Watering, as indicated above, must be carried out exclusively at the root.
Shelter for the winter
For winter, those raspberry varieties that bring large and juicy fruits are usually sheltered, because in this case they need warmth even in winter. This protective measure is carried out by bending the bushes at 45 ° and covering them with a special fiber or film.
It is not recommended to cover in the cold, as the film can quickly burst. You can also cover it if the winters in your region are too cold, and the temperature drops below -20 ° C. In addition, to prepare raspberries for wintering, it can be covered with sifted sand.
Optimal winter preparation times by region
The timing of preparation for winter is different: in Siberia and the Urals, preparation begins earlier than in the suburbs.
In outskirts of Moscow
In the suburbs begin preparations for winter from mid-August to early September. In this autumn period, pruning of the bushes and the first feeding are carried out.
Did you know? Of all the countries on the planet, raspberries are the most grown in Russia, and the yield exceeds 200 thousand tons per year.
In Siberia and the Urals
Trimming shrubs is best since August. Siberia and the Urals belong to the northern regions of Russia and winters are cold there. Since the plant is not frost-resistant to such cold snap, it is worth covering both the soil and the plants themselves. This will help preserve the fruitfulness of the plantings and save the bushes.

What will happen if you do not conduct autumn procedures
If the gardener does not conduct the autumn procedures for raspberries on time, then next year you can simply lose productivity, and in the worst case, the whole raspberry garden, because if you do not prune and water the plant will begin to rot and get very sick.
So, now you know what treatment procedures should be carried out in order to increase the yield and strengthen raspberry plantings. We must treat plants with care and attention, following the rules checked by generations of gardeners.
