Glen Coe's Rough Raspberry: Key Features
Farmers who grow Glen Koe raspberries speak pleasantly about the crop. The main advantage is the absence of spikes on the surface of the branches. Therefore, harvesting causes only joy, not discomfort.
Description of a variety of purple raspberries Glen Koe
In 1989, breeders from Scotland bred a new raspberry variety. During the work, as a starting material, seedlings of Prosen and Manger varieties were used.
Today, this variety is not included in the State Register of the country, and an official patent is not issued for it. But, this does not prevent Russian gardeners from growing bushes for their own use or for further sale.

Differences from Red Raspberries and Blackberries
Based on the description of the culture, the Glen Coy variety differs from red raspberries and blackberries in the following characteristics:
- lack of spikes;
- unusual shade of fruit;
- pleasant taste, without notes of acid.
Did you know? Glen Koe raspberries contain a large number of vitamins and minerals. Low calorie content (only 40 kcal per 100 g) allows you to use during a diet or treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
Appearance, characteristics of berries, fruiting periods, productivity
Glen Koe bushes grow up to 2 m. Despite the compactness of the plant, the crown is sprawling. Therefore, it is necessary to tie up the shoots so that they do not break under the influence of large berries. The leaves are characterized by a triple shape, large size and rich green color.
With the onset of summer, flower buds form on the surface of the bushes. Substituted shoots form quickly, therefore, reproduction worsens. Despite the low popularity of plants in Russia, large berries of purple or purple color, with a pink glow, leave no one indifferent.
The main characteristics of the fruits include:
- Conical shape.
- Berry mass - 7 g.
- The size of the berry is up to 2 cm.
- The presence of glossy gloss.
The pulp of the fruit is juicy and soft. There are a small number of small seeds that are easily separated from the pulp. The taste is pleasant, sweet. Acid is not observed. Products are suitable for fresh consumption or for the preparation of dishes (desserts, preserves or stewed fruit).
Did you know? A distinctive feature of the Glen Koe variety is the dry separation of berries. When overripe, the fruits do not crumble, and do not lose their taste.
Glen Coe yields are high. On each cluster up to 10 berries are formed. From 1 bush you can collect up to 6 kg of products. Fruiting occurs in the 2nd year after planting the variety. Bushes begin to bear fruit in early July. Since the variety belongs to mid-season species, it continues until the first drop in air temperature.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
- Common advantages of this variety include:
- there are no thorns on the shoots;
- high yield characteristics;
- fast growth of bushes;
- universality of use;
- the possibility of long-term storage and transportation;
- resistance to drought and frost;
- flexible annual shoots;
- disease resistance.
- Among the disadvantages are the following features:
- the need for garter bushes;
- exactingness to top dressing.
Based on the description of the variety, agricultural technology is simple and does not require special knowledge in the field of agriculture. If a farmer wishes to cultivate this variety, he must follow standard planting and care procedures.
Important! Crop conditions depend on the correct choice of plot and seedlings. Therefore, preparation for planting is carried out in advance.
The best time for planting a crop is the beginning of September. If you live in cold regions of the country, it is better to plant plants in the spring so that they can acclimatize to a permanent place.
When choosing a seat you need to consider many features. The most important factor is the occurrence of groundwater. They should be at a depth of 2 to 3 m. Due to this, the level of moisture will be optimal, and the roots will not rot. The soil before planting does not need to be moistened so that the roots do not feel discomfort. Otherwise, the plant will form worse.
To protect raspberries from wind, draft and plentiful sun, you need to plant a shrub at a distance of 3 m from fences or buildings, where a shadow will periodically appear, which will protect the bushes from sunburn.
The soil in the garden should be nutritious and light. The best option is loamy or sandy land. If the earth consists of clay, then before planting, you need to dilute it with river sand.
Young plants need to be planted in lighted areas. The more lighting will fall on the bushes, the faster and more plentifully the berries will ripen. Lack of light violates the taste of the Glen Koe variety.
Important! Choose a site for planting so that the acid-base balance does not exceed 4%. Otherwise, there will be a threat of deformation of the root system, and the death of the entire plantation.
Landing and care
A week before planting, they begin to prepare a seat and buy a seedling. The landing site must be fed with organic fertilizers. For this, for each 1 m² 10 kg of humus and 2 kg of compost are added. The soil is dug up on 1 bayonet of a shovel, removing all foreign objects (weed roots, stones and glass). Nothing should impede the development of plants.
When buying a seedling, the following features should be considered:
- Age from 1 to 2 years.
- The length of the roots is within 20-30 cm.
- Seedling height - 60-70 cm.
- Lack of signs of disease and pests.
After purchase, the seedling is placed for 2 hours in a manganese solution (1 tsp. In 4 l of water). After this, you need to soak the planting material in a solution of Kornevin and urea (100 g of substances per 10 liters of water). The plant is kept in such a solution for 3-5 hours. Such preparatory processes will destroy all bacteria that have accumulated on the surface and stimulate the growth of the bush.
Landing should be carried out on a cloudy and dry day. In the morning, dig holes according to the 2 × 3 m pattern. The dimensions of the landing pit should be 40 × 50 cm and a depth of at least 50 cm. 2 kg of humus is poured inside, and a seedling is placed. The root neck is left on the surface of the earth. The roots are leveled and sprinkled with fertile soil. After 2 hours, each bush is watered with 10 liters of warm water.
Further watering, for maximum fruiting, should be carried out with an interval of 20 days. Under 1 plant, pour 15 liters of warm water. In hot climates, the interval must be reduced to 10 days.
Top dressing is carried out several times during the season:
- at the stage of ovary formation, each bush is watered with a solution of ammonium nitrate (100 g per 5 l of water);
- in the process of berry formation, they feed the soil with a solution of potassium nitrate (50 g per 6 l of water). 10 l of the drug are poured into 1 m²;
- a week before harvesting, the last top dressing is carried out, which consists in using a solution of superphosphate (200 g per 10 liters of water). For 1 plant, 15 l of fertilizer is used. Such top dressing not only accelerates the ripening of berries, but also prepares the bushes for winter.
Pest and Disease Control
Based on the reviews, the Glen Koe raspberry variety is highly resistant to diseases and pests. However, on the surface of shrubs are often found signs of the following diseases:
- Purple spotting. Treatment consists of spraying a solution of Bordeaux liquid (10 g per 5 liters of water).
- White spotting. Hom (10 g per 4 l of water) is used against this disease.
- Anthracnose. The fight against anthracnosis is based on treatment with a Regent solution (30 g per 6 liters of water).
- Curly hair. The solution of Karbofos (100 g per 10 liters of water) helps to get rid of this disease.
- Chlorosis. The treatment is based on spraying with copper sulfate (10 g per 10 l of water).
Considering common pests, it should be noted aphids, glaziers, ticks and weevils. The fight against aphids and ticks consists in spraying with a solution of onion husks (100 g per 5 liters of water). A solution of cayenne pepper (5 tablespoons per 5 liters of water) helps to get rid of the glass and weevil.
All sprayings are carried out with an interval of 20 days. Prevention of diseases and pests consists in regularly weeding the soil and removing weeds. You also need to take care of protection from the constant sun.
The essence of the formation of a bush according to the principle of the stem is to prepare the plant for winter, and protect it from breaking branches. Gartering is carried out by several methods, including vertical direction, angular or free placement of shoots.
If you decide to use the trellis to prepare for the winter, then all the branches need to be tilted and tied to the bottom rope. The disadvantage of this method is the length of execution. Given that you need to tie up all the bushes, it will take about 2-3 hours to work.
Reproduction of the raspberry variety Glen Koe is carried out in several ways:
- By dividing the bush.
- Cherenkovym method.
- Using apical layers.
Pruning and wintering
Cut bushes in spring and autumn. In the spring, all parts of the bush that were damaged by frost are removed. Pruning is carried out using a sharp secateurs, at the level of the first kidney. It is important to carry out this procedure before the sap flow begins in the branches, but after the snow melts.
During autumn pruning, it is recommended to remove dry branches and shoots on which no berries have formed. Also cut off areas that were affected by diseases and pests. This is necessary so that during the winter holidays the symptoms of the diseases do not intensify.
You need to pinch young shoots at the end of August, so that by the time of the first frosts they manage to become covered with dense bark. In mid-October, you need to tilt all branches to the ground, cover with plastic wrap and sprinkle with earth. To avoid bushes, small holes are made in the film. Air will flow through the cuts. In the southern regions of the country, preparation for wintering involves mulching the soil.
Harvesting and transportation
Harvest need in plastic containers. Products are placed in several layers so that the berries are not choked. The fruits are harvested together with the stalks, because the shelf life is increased this way.
If you store products in the refrigerator, then the expiration date is 1 week. If you collect not fully ripened berries, then the terms can be increased up to 3 weeks. Some farmers freeze the fruits so that they can feast on them in the winter.
The raspberry variety Glen Koe is popular among summer residents. Despite the lack of a patent, it provides stable yield indicators of high quality. An unusual shade of berries allows you to use shrubs for a variety of gardens. Given that the variety is unpretentious in care, beginners and gardening specialists can engage in its cultivation.
